I created a series of black and white drawings leading to a reductive representation of a compact florescent bulb. I had to determine the essential aspects of this three-dimensional object that can be used to communicate its nature in a two-dimensional representation. Before I started this piece, I considered the relationship between social responsibility and the functionality of design. As a designer, I view my work with real, everyday practical implications and envision the function of socially conscious design. Throughout this project, I constantly returned to a need to 'balance' design with function, art with industry, and simplicity with subtle complication. Keeping this goal in mind, I created a print design that essentially functions with a balance between black space and white negative space; I employ the features of curvature, symmetry and overall simple beauty of a light bulb. This piece encapsulates the aims of Green design and industry by not only conserving and optimizing the earth's resources, but also appeals to a forward-thinking generation.
