I designed a poster that focused on a typographic family and its significance while being limited to 200 words that explains the type family, the designers and a history of the classification of the typographic family. In conceptualizing this project, I chose the Helvetica, which is a font created by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann in Switzerland, because of its unique history. In essence, the designers invented this font type in hopes to evoke a neutral typeface that contained no inherent meaning and could be used on a plethora of signage. In laying out my design, I elected to shape the Swiss iconic cross out of the Helvetica font to signify the importance to the its origins and history. Moreover, I designed the text of the poster to transverse the lines of the cross to create and complicate the implied history and original purpose with contemporary uses of the font type. This is used in widely popular wordmarks for a variety of companies. The practical application of this work could be seen in marketing the history of the type or a campaign, such the "Helvetica Movie" that was recently released.
