I am creating a public installation of a piece called Surveillance in which I display film clips that vary in their disturbance/intensity alongside close-up videos of subjects watching the clips. The juxtaposition of the videos with headshots of other individuals watching in real time makes the viewer question their own response to the content and places the content within the larger context of society. The impact of each potentially disturbing film clip is multiplied as the subject realizes the effect it has on others and the compound effect that it has on the subject watching as part of a virtual group. Using technology to communicate social impact in a subtle way is one method that I am exploring to spark change.
