I was charged with creating a digital movie that “recontextualize and rework the familiar movie/tv narrative languages as well as creates my own languages in a non-narrative mode.” One of the movies I created was a narrative reflecting the history of the Coach handbag. I was inspired to create the movie after my aunt purchased a large Coach bag. Intrigued by her interest in spending a lot of money on a fairly simple purse, I decided to look into the history of the Coach brand. Through my research, I discovered that the founder of Coach was inspired by a baseball glove when he observed its distinctive markings. The story of the birth of a handbag based on a baseball glove provided an excellent opportunity to create a linear movie reflecting Coach's past and present image.
One of my top goals for this project was to achieve the right lighting. I experimented with different lightning and found the best effect from two powerful halogen lamps. These bright lights worked the best for this video because they emphasized the detail in the stitching and the pattern of the purse. Also, I used a small rotating table to move the handbag in one smooth motion as I filmed.
To contrast past and present, I used a sepia tone filter combined with an old movie filter to make the video appear as if it had been filmed in the past. This transitioned to a sharp, filter free video of the modern handbag, emphasizing the crisp image of Coach today. |
